Morgan Rogers has broken the British transfer record following his £117 million move to Chelsea.
It’s a move that has sparked plenty of debate amongst fans and the media, as nine-figure transfers become increasingly common.
For Rogers though, this moment in his career serves as a reminder that there is no straight road in football.
After four years, he is reunited with his childhood friend, Cole Palmer, who took a completely different route to the top. Palmer arrived at his destination sooner, but the detour has proved just as rewarding for Rogers.
Not every star breaks through immediately
It’s a common misconception that most top players break through smoothly as teenagers. While there are the rare cases of Rio Ngumoha and Max Dowman settling into first team football immediately, that’s not the reality for so many more.
Those examples can skew young players’ expectations of how their careers should unfold.
Rogers wasn’t one of those players. He needed loan moves, failures and lower division experience before he excelled at Aston Villa.
But his patience did pay off, as he has since gone on to represent England at the World Cup, win a Europa League title at Villa and help them qualify for the Champions League twice.

Once the move was confirmed, Cole Palmer took to Instagram and posted a story of pictures of the pair, with the caption: “Playing for Chelsea with one of your best friends in life.”
Via the Chelsea website, Rogers said: “We’ve been speaking about this for a while, that we would always love to play together.
“He’s been non-stop ringing my phone, texting me, and I can’t wait. I think that’s probably the most special thing, playing with one of your best friends and being around him every day. It’s something I’m really excited about.”
Palmer was at City since 2010, when he was eight years old. Rogers joined nine years later from West Brom, aged 17.
The duo played together at youth level for both City and England for four years, before both leaving Manchester in the summer of 2023.
This is the reality for many players in the academy. In an instant, your best friends and people who you’ve watched grow up suddenly leave for other clubs across the country or even the world.
Different journeys to the Bridge
Despite sharing the pitch for years, Rogers and Palmer took very different journeys to get to Stamford Bridge.
In 2021, when Palmer had begun breaking into the first team and scored his first Champions League goal, Rogers was on loan at Lincoln City, before being shipped off again on loan to Bournemouth.
As Rogers began making waves in the Championship with Middlesbrough, Palmer was starring in his first season at Chelsea, establishing himself as the club’s most influential player.
By summer 2024, Rogers had at last made it to the Premier League, and was resting up after helping the Villains secure Champions League football. Meanwhile, Cole Palmer was scoring in European Championship finals for England, having just won Young Player of the Season in the Premier League.
One left Manchester City and became a superstar almost overnight, while the other took the long road. From academy teammates to Chelsea’s future, reunited at the top.
There is no ‘perfect’ route
Hundreds, if not thousands, of academy players turn their noses up at loan moves to the lower leagues.
The fear of falling behind and not being amongst a Premier League training session and environment stops so many from taking the leap to hone their skills.
Yet Rogers serves as the perfect example of how patience and laying the foundations of your career can pay greater dividends down the line.
His story is proof that football careers don’t have to follow the same timeline to reach the very top. After all, who was called up to the World Cup this summer?
The debate as to whether Rogers is worth the record fee will echo on throughout the season, but there can be no dispute that the move itself was well-earned.
The road to Stamford Bridge has been full of twists and turns, but it’s surely made the destination all the more rewarding.
