Check out my match preview:
Today’s venue: Goodison Park, Liverpool
The starting line-ups are out, take a look:
EVERTON VS BRIGHTON: AS IT HAPPENED
1′: Here we go! Everton’s first game in their last season at Goodison Park, Idrissa Gana Gueye gets us underway as referee Simon Hooper blows his whistle.
2′: Jack Hinshelwood makes his first start since February after missing the end of last season with a fractured foot. The last game he played in was against Crystal Palace, where he scored in a 4-1 win at the Amex.
Embed from Getty Images4′: Jack Harrison forces an early save from Jason Steele. He cut inside past Hinshelwood before striking powerfully. Steele met it well and Everton have a corner.
5′: GOAL FOR EVERTON! No, it’s ruled out instantly for offside. Jack Harrison, who won the corner, is the man to score but it won’t count as he was clearly beyond the last defender.
7′: A big shock for Brighton straight away with that goal, it could have been a disaster start for the Albion under Hurzeler.
Embed from Getty Images8′: Terrible miss from Dwight McNeil, offside flag stays down and Abdoulaye Doucoure squares the ball to McNeil. The English winger hits the post from close range and then misses the rebound completely.
Embed from Getty Images9′: Joao Pedro hits the post from long range! The Brazilian forward went for goal from outside the penalty area and caught Jordan Pickford out there. He didn’t look like he thought that was on target but was quickly proven wrong. Unlucky from Pedro who’s effort was decent.
11′: James Milner starts in the midfield today. He made his Premier League debut in 2002 when Brighton manager Hurzeler was just nine years old.
Embed from Getty Images13′: Brighton concede a free kick in a dangerous area as debutant Mats Wieffer makes a foul. The chance is wasted though as James Tarkowski heads over the bar. Goal kick to Brighton.
14′: Harrison is looking particularly dangerous in these opening minutes, Hinshelwood has got his work cut out for him on the far side.
15′: Yankuba Minteh made a decent run forward and went to square the ball to Pedro but Tarkowski blocked. Perhaps the Gambian should have been more selfish there.
Embed from Getty Images17′: Minteh beats two Everton midfielders in the middle of the park before threading a lovely ball through to Mitoma, his shot is powerful but blocked. Good stuff from the Albion who have been on the back foot so far.
19′: It’s out to Harrison again but this time he disappoints with a horrible cross nowhere near Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box. The home fans aren’t happy with that one.
20′: Milner is caught in possession by Tim Iroegbunam and the debutant drives forwards to shoot. His effort is off target but he’s shown great awareness so far.
Embed from Getty Images22′: Joel Veltman launches a cross towards the back post where Kaoru Mitoma is waiting. The ball is taken away from him and Brighton have a throw-in.
23′: We are halfway through the first half and Everton have been the better side so far with Brighton looking very open at the back. Still, it’s 0-0 and Brighton have slowly calmed down in this match.
24′: Referee Hooper has been letting a lot of fouls go so far but he’s stopped play for Jan Paul van Hecke’s foul on the halfway line.
25′: GOALLL FOR BRIGHTON!! It’s Mitoma on his return who actually starts the move before passing the ball out to Minteh. The Gambian winger drops his shoulder to beat Vitalii Mykolenko and drives the ball across the face of goal. Mitoma is waiting on the end of the cross and taps the ball past Pickford. Everton 0-1 Brighton.
Embed from Getty Images26′: The away side have struggled so far but they can relax now as they take the lead. Everton with the work to do now.
29′: Calvert-Lewin holds onto possession on the left side under pressure. Everton recycle the ball and it’s ended up at the feet of Doucoure but it’s the Dutchman van Hecke to slide in and clear the danger.
31′: Milner is shown a yellow card for an unnecessary challenge on Mykolenko, who had already passed the ball. Maybe a bit of frustration taken out there as the veteran midfielder has endured a first half to forget so far.
33′: The duel between Minteh and Mykolenko has been the most exciting so far. The Everton full-back is winning a few but Minteh came out on top in the most important one.
34′: Ashley Young has gone down and stayed down, clutching his head after a collision with Pedro. Nothing in it though as neither player was looking at the other.
35′: Young is back on his feet and play has resumed, 10 minutes of regular time before the interval. Can Everton find a way back into the match?
Embed from Getty Images37′: Brighton are beginning to pass the ball around nicely, allowing supporters to finally see Hurzeler-ball in full flow. When it works, Everton are struggling to deal with the tempo.
38′: Hinshelwood concedes a throw-in after failing to deal with the pressure put on him by Calvert-Lewin. The boyhood Brighton fan hasn’t been at his best so far but it’s understandable as he starts at left-back for the first time on his return from injury.
Embed from Getty Images40′: Everton are pushing for an equaliser before the interval, coming forward in numbers. The visitors Brighton are absorbing the pressure nicely though.
42′: There’s a break in play after a nasty collision between Minteh and Mykolenko there. Minteh has stayed down. The replay shows the pair have both gone for the ball whipped into the far post and Mykolenko has clattered into the side of Minteh’s face.
Embed from Getty Images44′: It’s been a couple of minutes and Minteh is still down receiving treatment from the medical staff.
45′: Minteh is back on his feet and will surely make a proper assessment during the interval, as that was a huge coming together.
45+1′: Brighton are making a substitution and Minteh is absolutely fuming with the medical staff. Simon Adingra is getting ready to replace him, the Ivorian scored six league goals last season.
Embed from Getty Images45+3′: Brighton are seeing out the half now while Minteh is still ranting on the sidelines.
HT: Brighton have the lead at the break but Everton were the better side for most of the half. Harrison in particular has caused the away defence all kinds of problems but Minteh and Mitoma’s counter-attack caught the Toffees out. Plenty more to come in the second half. See you in 15 minutes.
45′: We are back in action for the second half as Brighton’s Adingra gets affairs underway.
47′: Penalty to Everton! Wieffer makes a shocking mistake and puts his defence in a lot of trouble. Lewis Dunk makes the challenge on Calvert-Lewin, but he’s adamant it was not a foul.
Embed from Getty Images48′: VAR have asked Hooper to come over to the screen, that’s not supposed to happen a lot this season so he may change his mind here.
49′: No penalty! Hooper has overruled the foul. It’s no penalty as Calvert-Lewin is deemed to have initiated contact first by treading on Dunk’s ankle. Boos ring out around Merseyside.
51′: Hurzeler surely needs to make a change on the nearside, Hinshelwood is being targeted and Harrison is having a field day.
Embed from Getty Images54′: Veltman goes down with a head injury and has had to be taken off to the sidelines. I doubt he’ll be substituted as Minteh was although Carlos Baleba is warming up.
56′: GOALLL FOR WELBECK!! Wieffer plays the ball into Welbeck’s feet and the experienced striker burst forwards under no pressure. Michael Keane doesn’t close him down and Welbeck cuts onto his left foot before dispatching the finish into the bottom-left corner. Once again the Seagulls have gone against the momentum of the match to silence the home fans. Everton 0-2 Brighton.
58′: Welbeck gets his 15th consecutive Premier League campaign underway in fine fashion with his 27th Brighton goal. It’s also his ninth goal involvement against Everton in the Premier League.
Embed from Getty Images62′: Iliman Ndiaye comes on for his Everton debut, he recently signed from Marseille. Doucoure makes way for the Senegalese forward.
63′: Mitoma goes through again but it’s a good save from Pickford. The England goalkeeper is doing it all on his own at the moment, with the defence offering no support.
Embed from Getty Images65′: Free kick to Brighton from long range after Ndiaye fouled Wieffer. Brighton opt to go short and find Adingra, but the attack fizzles out.
66′: RED CARD FOR EVERTON. It goes from bad to worse for the home side as Young makes an error and can’t make up ground. He’s forced to drag Mitoma to the floor, who was through on goal, preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. Hooper goes straight for his shirt pocket and ends Young’s afternoon early.
Embed from Getty Images67′: Sean Dyche has a decision to make now. Do Everton go for three in defence? Do they go all guns blazing now? And most importantly, who will play right-back in future games?
69′: Mason Holgate is getting ready to come on as Young’s replacement. Dwight McNeil is currently filling the void until Everton can make the change.
71′: Brighton are in complete control now with the one-man advantage. Mitoma is continuing to wreak havoc on the wing. It’s so good for Brighton to have him back fully fit.
Embed from Getty Images75′: Second change for Brighton, captain Dunk is replaced by Adam Webster. Everton also make a change, Beto is on for Calvert-Lewin who couldn’t really get going this afternoon.
77′: Lovely turn from Pedro but he’s brought down by Tarkowski who at last gets his name in Hooper’s book. You have to say that’s been coming.
80′: Mitoma is amongst the action once more, looking for an assist as he threads the ball through to Pedro one-on-one, but Pickford stops the attack again. It would be three or four if not for the England shot-stopper who is understandably furious with his defence.
82′: Double change for Brighton; Pedro and Milner make way for Billy Gilmour and Jeremy Sarmiento.
Embed from Getty Images85′: Harrison is subbed off which I’m sure Hinshelwood will be pleased about. He is replaced by Holgate, who will slot in at right-back.
87′: GOALLL FOR BRIGHTON!! It’s game over at Goodison Park as substitute Adingra puts the final nail in the coffin. It was a brilliant team goal finished off by the Ivory Coast interntaional. He cut inside and placed his finish in the bottom left corner. The whole team rush over to the away fans who have enjoyed a brilliant day out. The same can’t be said for the home fans who are streaming out of the stadium.
Embed from Getty Images89′: Man of the match Mitoma is subbed off for Yasin Ayari. This marks the Swedish midfielder’s fifth Brighton appearance.
90+2′: BRIGHTON MAKE IT FOUR!! Yasin Ayari gets his first Albion goal just minutes after coming on, Adingra squared the ball and Ayari slid in to poke the ball home and he’s absolutely elated. What a moment for the 20-year-old.
Embed from Getty Images90+3′: Such a shame for Ayari as his goal is ruled out for offside, no impact on the result of course but a great moment taken from the young Swedish midfielder. Correct decision though from VAR, not sure how many times we’ll be saying that this season.
90+5′: The Everton fans have all left now bar a few die-hard fans. It feels like a lockdown game now, as you can clearly hear the players’ shouts rather than chants.
Embed from Getty Images90+7′: Van Hecke appears to be suffering from cramp as we enter the seventh minute of additional time. He looks fine to continue so certainly nothing serious.
FT: It’s all over here at Goodison Park as visitors Brighton come out the 3-0 victors and Hurzeler enjoys a managerial debut to remember. The game could have been totally different as in the 47th minute Calvert-Lewin’s penalty shout was overturned. Ashley Young’s red card opened up the game massively and the Albion capitalised in style. That’s all from me – thanks for following along, goodbye!
