Liverpool edged Real Madrid 1-0 at Anfield in a Champions League battle that saw the Reds dominate despite the one-goal margin.

From the opening whistle, Liverpool pressed with intent, their mid-block pressing and rapid transitions unsettling Real Madrid, who carried the ball well but lacked cutting edge and their only credible chance before the goal came late. Thibaut Courtois made several key saves to keep Madrid in the game.

Real Madrid’s first-half penalty appeal was knocked back after a VAR review as Aurelien Tchouaméni’s arm was deemed not to be a handball. The reprieve only strengthened Liverpool’s momentum.

A powerful header from Alexis Mac Allister in the 61st minute, assisted by Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick. After Mac Allister’s goal, Liverpool held their shape and snuffed out Real Madrid’s usual attacking patterns.

Although Madrid pushed late bringing on attacking reinforcements, they never truly looked like crossing the line. Liverpool’s defence, marshalled by the likes of Virgil van Dijk and aided by energetic wide coverage, hung on.

Beyond the result, this win is a statement. Liverpool halted Madrid’s previously unblemished European run this season and picked up momentum when it counted. For Madrid, the alarm bells have rung loud: possession without potency, chances without finish, and once again gaps when required to press and threaten.
