Xabi Alonso admitted his side need time to adapt after a “very mixed” start to his managerial reign, following Real Madrid’s 1‑1 draw with Al‑Hilal in their Club World Cup opener.

Alonso said the first half “wasn’t very good” but praised his team’s resurgence after the break.  “We were able to change our rhythm… we spent more time near their area… this is a process. Everything takes time”

It’s clear he believes foundations were laid, even if immediate results didn’t follow.

He also singled out the debutants, “I’m thrilled for them. They have that personality and they’ll be important players for us.”

That tipped the spotlight onto Trent Alexander‑Arnold and Dean Huijsen, both of whom earned their first minutes in white amid the heat and pace of the new competition.

On the missed penalty by Valverde, Alonso was non‑plussed, “Missing happens… but overall, the second half reaction showed positives.”

He’s already looking forward: “All coaches here are new… Pachuca will be tough too,” he added. Which gives us something to watch next as Madrid’s growth curve under Alonso is just starting.
