Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio boost Aston Villa’s Champions League hopes and secure their side’s sixth consecutive win in all competitions. Donyell Malen also scored his first goal for the club as Unai Emery’s side beat Brighton 3-0 away from home.

Rashford broke the deadlock in the 51st minute as Aston Villa caught the hosts out on the counter-attack. Brighton’s had a corner but Jan Paul van Hecke’s header was saved easily by Emiliano Martinez.

The Villa goalkeeper rolled the ball out to Morgan Rogers who lofted the ball over the entire Brighton side to unlock Rashford. The on loan forward calmly slotted the ball past Bart Verbruggen to score his first Premier League goal for Unai Emery’s side.

Villa doubled their lead in the 78th minute as Marco Asensio made an instant impact off the bench. Morgan Rogers claimed the assist again with a drilled pass into the box and Asensio rifled the strike into the bottom corner to ensure the victory.

Donyell Malen put the nail in the coffin in the 10th minute of additional time to make it 3-0. His strike across goal into the far corner was his first for the club.

Brighton quickly equalised after Rashford’s goal as Simon Adingra thumped the ball home but, after a lengthy VAR check, his goal was ruled out for a handball from Mitoma in the build-up.

There was plenty of controversy in the first half as both Brighton and Aston Villa were denied a penalty. Jacob Ramsey appeared to be fouled by Jack Hinshelwood who was already on a yellow card.

Referee, Stuart Attwell, said no but it seemed destined to be a penalty when VAR checked. However, VAR agreed with the on field decision.

Brighton should have also been given a penalty moments before the interval as an Aston Villa defender seemed to handle the ball after Yasin Ayari’s free kick crashed off the post.

Unai Emery’s side leapfrog Brighton in the league table and are now seventh on 48 points. The hosts remain on 47 points and drop to eighth.
