What happened during match day 13?

Premier League action got underway at the Amex Stadium as Southampton held Brighton to a 1-1 draw under the lights.

Brentford and Bournemouth scored four to beat Leicester and Wolves respectively. Arsenal smashed West Ham 5-2, whilst in South London, relegation threatened Crystal Palace earned a vital point against Newcastle.

Nottingham Forest continued their impressive start to the campaign with a 1-0 win over Ipswich.

On Sunday, Chelsea comfortably overcame Aston Villa and Man United scored four to beat Everton in Amorim’s first league match at home.

Fulham went to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and returned home with a point, despite being a man down for the final 15 minutes.

Finally, the game week ended at Anfield for the blockbuster clash we’d all been waiting for. Liverpool faced their toughest test yet under Arne Slot and were triumphant once again, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

What did we learn?

Brighton’s form is backwards – Brighton have caused quite the confusion this season. They beat Manchester City, Tottenham, Manchester United and Newcastle but failed to beat Southampton and Ipswich.

It’s a strange time to be a Brighton fan but at the moment spirits are still high as the Albion sit pretty in fourth. If they want to qualify for Europe again though, they need to be comfortably winning the “easier” matches.

It’s Liverpool’s title to lose – There hasn’t been a team that has looked as comfortable as Liverpool after game week 13 in many years. They lead by nine points but regardless of their incredible advantage, the Reds seem so focused and intelligent in their matches.

The cool and calm approach Arne Slot has installed is taking the whole of Europe by storm and if it wasn’t for pesky Nottingham Forest, Liverpool would still be unbeaten all season.

They look fantastic and surely won’t let up, the system seems flawless. Liverpool might just shock everyone less than 12 months after Jurgen Klopp’s departure announcement.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has a lot of work to do – On Friday night, Ruud van Nistelrooy was announced as the new Leicester City manager and on Saturday, he watched on as his side we thrashed 4-1.

The defeat to Brentford highlighted just what the Premier League legend has signed up for. Leicester aren’t in the relegation zone but must pick up some more points before the New Year.

With games against West Ham and Wolves, there is certainly a good chance of that. How well van Nistelrooy will fair, only time will tell.

Moment of match day 13:

This week, the best moment came during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Man City. After Mohamed Salah put the Reds two goals ahead, Liverpool fans begun singing to Pep Guardiola.

They sung: “You’re getting sacked in the morning”, as the City boss was heading towards his sixth defeat in seven matches.

The Spaniard responded by reminding Liverpool fans how many Premier League title he had won. Unfortunately for him though, Liverpool got the last laugh as they flew nine points clear at the top of the league.
