Via The Player’s Tribune, Frankfurt forward Mario Gotze revealed he was close to reuniting with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in 2016.

His column, titled “A Letter To My Children” highlighted not only the highs and lows of his career, but the moments where he came close to becoming a Premier League player.

In 2016, Gotze had a meeting with Klopp in Liverpool. According to Gotze, Klopp told him “You’ll play a lot and have fun here. The club is amazing, have a think about it”.

The German admitted he regrets not joining the Reds, saying “I wish I had been a little more patient”.

Gotze didn’t join Liverpool as he wanted “to win things right away” and Liverpool “had just finshed eighth in England”.

“I do feel that I missed out on a special journey with Jurgen. I didn’t understand that he needed time to build a great team.”

Three years later, Gotze came close again to joining a Premier League side, this time it was Manchester United who wanted him.

Gotze rejected that offer though as he wanted to wait until the end of the 2019/20 season when his contract expired at Dortmund to assess all his options.

The German also spoke about his World Cup winning goal in 2014, and why he doesn’t want to be remembered only for that moment.

He said: “I don’t want to be known only as the guy who scored that goal… it was an incredible moment but it was just one chapter in my life”.
