What happened during match day ten?
St James’ Park was where the weekend begun as Alexander Isak scored the only goal in a surprising win over Arsenal. Later in the day Man City’s 32 game unbeaten run in the Premier League was ended by Bournemouth.
Liverpool capitilised with a comeback against Brighton, Nottingham Forest also won, beating West Ham 3-0 to storm into third place. Southampton’s Adam Armstrong scored late to earn three points, his side’s first this season.
Ipswich looked to have beaten Leicester but another last gasp goal from Jordan Ayew stopped that happening. At the bottom of the table, Wolves drew with Crystal Palace.
On Sunday, Tottenham thrashed Aston Villa who have dropped off in the last couple matches. Dominic Solanke’s brace inspired a 4-1 victory for the Lily-whites. At Old Trafford, Ruud van Nistelrooy led Manchester United to a vital point against Chelsea.
Game week 10 concluded at Craven Cottage as Fulham defied the odds in additional time to beat rivals Brentford. Vitaly Janelt’s stunning opener looked to be enough for the Bees but Harry Wilson scored two in five minutes to ensure a deserved victory. Janelt’s goal had an xG of just 0.03 but after 26 attempts on goal, Marco Silva’s side found the breakthrough before shortly adding a winner.
What did we learn?
Forest are flying – Three years ago this week, Forest were 18th in the Championship. Now, they sit third in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool who they beat earlier this season.
Their most recent victory was a comfortable one over the Hammers, Chris Wood scored his eighth goal of the league campaign in his sides impressive 3-0 showing. At some point Forest will inevitably drop off to a more modest position, but for now, it’s great to see them return to their peak for the first time in almost 30 years.
Liverpool take an early advantage – With Arsenal and Man City both suffering defeats, Liverpool have headed two points clear with 26 points. Arne Slot’s side beat Brighton 2-1, meaning he has now won eight out of his first 10 Premier League games.
A Man City side without Rodri is clearly taking a toll, and Arsenal have plenty to deal with injury wise too. It’s time to start taking Liverpool as serious contenders for the Premier League this season.
Solanke is finding his feet at Spurs – Dominic Solanke raised eyebrows in the summer when it was announced he’d be joining Tottenham for a reported fee worth up to £65 million.
However, the English forward is starting to settle down in North London. He’s scored four goals in the league this season, including a brace against Aston Villa. Alongside the goals a fantastic work rate the fans adore. Perhaps Spurs finally have the man good enough to replace Harry Kane.
Moment of match day ten:
This week, the best moment came after Nottingham Forest’s win over West Ham where Ola Aina admitted the hilarious reasoning behind his wonder goal.
An incredible goal but clearly not as much thought put into it as you may think, still it helped Forest climb into the Champions League spaces.
“I was knackered anyway so I thought I might as well hit it,” Aina said, whilst sipping a carton of Ribena. Social media are loving this post-match interview, take a look.
