PSG and Aston Villa kickstart the 2026-27 season in Austria this evening as they face off in the UEFA Super Cup Final. Champions League winners PSG are looking to go back-to-back after they beat Tottenham 4-3 on penalties last year. Meanwhile, Villa aim to become the first Europa League champion to win the Super Cup since Atletico Madrid in 2018/19.
The two sides faced off in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2024-25 and played out a thrilling encounter across two legs.

PSG haven’t had the luxury of a full squad in matches throughout pre-season, due to many of their key players being on holiday after the World Cup. Against Mallorca, they suffered a 3-0 defeat, but had seven players aged 22 or under in the starting 11. Similarly, against Manchester United, five teenagers featured in the 1-1 draw.
However, against Villa, the superstars will be back in town and, in turn, the results should start going their way.
The Villains have endured a mixed bag throughout pre-season. They have won two of their five pre-season fixtures, with one remaining against Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend. However, the two wins have come against League Two outfit Walsall (5-0) and Thai side BG Pathum United (3-1). Against sides of more merit, such as Porto, Real Sociedad and Bayern Munich, Villa have lost on all three occasions.
Unai Emery’s side have held their own against PSG before though, handing them a tough test in the Champions League in April 2025. PSG narrowly progressed as 5-4 winners on aggregate, but Villa almost caused a shock in the second leg, beating the French giants 3-2 at Villa Park.
Only eight of the last 26 finals have seen Europa League winners come out victorious, so Aston Villa will have to pull out all the stops to be on the right side of history.
What’s been said?
PSG boss Luis Enrique: “Everyone’s believes we are the favourites. But that’s just theoretical; we need to prove on the pitch that we’re up to it.
“It’s always tricky to know what sort of match it will be. We’ll be looking to control possession. These are difficult matches to control, but I hope we’ll be as competitive as we were last year. It’s the first official match, but it’s an important one for us. We want to have another unforgettable year with our supporters too.
“Last year was a special year and this year too. We will try to play at the best level possible, even if we want to be in our best form at the end of the season!”
Villa boss Unai Emery: “Of course, PSG is a huge test, because normally they will have the opportunity as a favourite to win this trophy, but how we are collectively as a club is something that makes us so proud of how we are in the football world now. To play (in the) Super Cup is another opportunity to be there.
“In football, we are trying to be successful through firstly building a winning team, and then with the positive consequences after it, to win trophies. Europe is very important personally; it gave me a lot. And to achieve it with Aston Villa is something I feel the club is taking into a new era with this possibility to fight for trophies.”
