Xabi Alonso takes charge of Real Madrid for the first time as they face Al-Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup in Florida.

The Spaniard has handed debuts to summer signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, both named in the starting XI. Fellow new face Gonzalo is also involved, alongside Fran García, who makes a rare start.

Vinicius Jr, who was man of the match when Madrid beat Al-Hilal 5–3 in 2023, starts up front with Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Federico Valverde. Thibaut Courtois, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Marco Asensio round out a strong side.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Vinicius Jr said winning the trophy would mean a lot to the club.

“We’re eager to win this first World Cup because people never forget the first one and it’s the only title Madrid doesn’t have. We’re going for it,” he told Real Madrid TV.

Madrid entered this competition off the back of a summer of change. Alonso, who starred as a player at the Bernabéu, now leads a refreshed side aiming to make history.

Al-Hilal, runners-up two years ago, are familiar opponents. Madrid were dominant in their last meeting but Alonso will know no side can be underestimated in a tournament this short.

Kick-off is set for 3pm local time in the Florida heat, something Vinicius admitted could be a factor.

“It’s very hot. The match is at three in the afternoon and we have to be ready because it’s going to be very tough.”
