Since joining Brighton in July 2024, Mats Wieffer has endured a turbulent start to life at the Albion.

His mistake against Wolves, the goal against West Ham and the long spell out has meant Brighton fans haven’t been too sure what to make of the Dutchman.

In the last few weeks though, Wieffer has begun to show his quality, versatility and potential.

In the Albion’s recent match against West Ham, Wieffer played the entire match at right-back, where he had impressed in the previous match against Brentford.

During the match, Wieffer won six duels and three tackles. He also pulled the strings from deep, completing 59 passes and creating one chance.

The Dutchman also had an opportunity of his own to score from a corner, but was denied by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Over the last few weeks, Wieffer’s form has begun to build. He’s not featured loads this year, but when he does from the start, he impresses.

Wieffer’s last three starts have come against West Ham twice and Brentford. In these games, he’s made 18 passes into the final third and provided one goal and one assist.

Out of possession, he’s been equally as impressive, winning 56 tackles and making 22 defensive actions.

Despite the mixed start on the South Coast, Wieffer’s quality is clear for all to see. Over the coming weeks, the Dutch midfielder should continue to show promise and next season is where he will surely shine.

The Premier League is a tough league to adapt to, it’s taken some time, but with regular minutes at Brighton next season, Wieffer can become a top midfielder.
