Aston Villa’s 100% over as bizarre penalty leads to defeat in Brugge. Club Brugge narrowly beat Unai Emery’s side as Tyrone Mings had a Champions League debut to forget, conceding a penalty for picking the ball up in his 18-yard box.

Seven minutes into the second half Aston Villa had a goal kick which Emiliano Martinez played to Mings. The English defender picked up the ball and took the goal kick himself, not realising his goalkeeper has already started play.

The referee pointed to the spot, much to the frustration of Emery who couldn’t believe the decision.

Hans Vanaken stepped up and converted from the spot. He went straight down the middle to beat Martinez.

Although Villa came into the game as favourites, their spotless Champions League record was tarnished by the Belgian champions.

This defeat marks Villa’s third in a row in all competitions, which has not happened to them since May.

For Club Brugge, the three points mean they take a big step towards qualification. They are 20th on six points, one point off automatic qualification.

Villa meanwhile fell to fifth, but did not show enough urgency to pull a goal back at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
