What happened during match day nine?

This match week begun on Friday night at Leicester’s King Power Stadium as Nottingham Forest picked up yet another win. Saturday was full of last minute goals, leaving many sides at the top end of the table feeling hard done by. Brighton threw away a two goal lead in five minutes after Evan Ferguson’s goal seemingly put the game to bed, Wolves came back to earn a vital 2-2 draw. Aston Villa drew 1-1 against Bournemouth as Evanilson scored a 96th minute equaliser and Everton’s Beto did the same in the 94th minute against Fulham.

Brentford avoided a stalemate despite conceding a late goal to Ipswich as Bryan Mbuemo left it even later to score the winner in a seven goal thriller. Manchester City went top of the league with a 1-0 win over Southampton, Erling Haaland scored early to end his three game drought in the league.

On Sunday Crystal Palace won their first game of the campaign against Tottenham, whilst Chelsea’s Cole Palmer scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

Manchester United’s sorry run of form continued as they suffered a late defeat to West Ham, leading to Erik ten Hag’s departure this morning. The weekend concluded at the Emirates as Arsenal and Liverpool played out a 2-2 draw. Bukayo Saka returned and scored within nine minutes but his side were forced to settle for a point as Mohamed Salah equalised in the 81st minute.

What did we learn?

Aston Villa suffer from the mid-week hangover – Despite a stellar start to the campaign across all competitions, Aston Villa slipped up against Bournemouth. They conceded a 96th minute goal, cancelling out Ross Barkley’s strike just 20 minutes earlier.

With all the football played of late by Unai Emery’s side, it was only a matter of time before it had a physical and mental affect. Villa have a chance to bounce back in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday against Crystal Palace, before a much tougher test on the weekend against Tottenham away from home.

Liam Delap is shining up top for Ipswich – If you’re an Ipswich fan there’s not a lot to be pleased about so far this season. Despite glimpses of brilliance and some important draws against top opposition, the Tractor Boys are yet to win a game this season.

Kieran McKenna’s side are 18th, two points off safety. However, one shining light is Liam Delap. The young forward raised a few eyebrows when he signed in the summer for up to £20 million but has already scored 5 goals in the Premier League this season. If Ipswich do survive, they’ll have their new talisman to thank.

Arsenal trial by five points ALREADY – Before a ball was kicked at the start of the 2024/25 season, many had predicted this season was at last destined to be Arsenal’s.

However, after just nine matches, the Gunner’s sit in third, five points behind league leaders Manchester City. After a shocking defeat to Bournemouth in game week eight and various injury troubles setting them back, maybe another year of heartache awaits for Arsenal.

Moment of match day nine:

The biggest moment this week came this morning as Manchester United released a statement announcing that Erik ten Hag had been sacked after two years as manager.

The statement read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Many managers are linked with the permanent role including Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and even former England manager Gareth Southgate.
