What happened during match day eight?

Spurs smashed West Ham in the opening game of the weekend. Son marked his return with a goal as his side demolished Lopetegui’s 4-1. Aston Villa, Brighton and Everton picked up three points in crucial matches whilst Southampton bottled a two-goal lead against Leicester. The Foxes scored a 98th minute winner to snatch a 3-2 victory.

Erik ten Hag had some pressure taken off his shoulders as United beat Brentford 2-1. Rasmus Hojlund scored the winner to accompany Alejandro Garnacho’s equaliser.

The Saturday shocker came at the Vitality Stadium as 10 man Arsenal lost 2-0 to Bournemouth. The Cherries had a numerical advantage for over an hour after William Saliba was sent off and made it count.

On Sunday Man City left it late against Wolves as John Stones saved the day again from a corner and Liverpool passed their toughest test yet against Chelsea. Curtis Jones scored the winner in front of the Kop to keep the Reds top of the league.

Game week eight came to a close at the City ground as Nottingham Forset beat Crystal Palace 1-0. Chris Wood scored the only goal taking his tally to five for this season.

What did we learn?

Arsenal finally lose away from home in 2024 – After an incredible 12 game run unbeaten on the road in 2024, Arsenal are at last defeated. It was a match that defied all odds, Bournemouth kept a clean sheet for the first time in 10 matches and Arsenal failed to score in a league match for the first time since April.

The controversial sending off of William Saliba impacted the match as Mikel Arteta was forced to bring off Raheem Sterling for Jakub Kiwior. The Gunners were already without Bukayo Saka, so from the red card onwards, they struggled to produce much in the final third and eventually lost 2-0.

Facundo Buonanotte is flourishing on loan – Since joining Leicester on a season long loan from Brighton, Buonanotte has excelled as a star player in the newly promoted side.

In his last six matches, the Argentine has five goal involvements. Buonanotte kick-started the comeback with a tidy finish against Southampton but was influential throughout the entire match. He completed the most dribbles (four), created the second most chances (three) and won the most duels (13).

Slotball passes toughest test so far – Arne Slot has come in and made quite the impact since taking over from Jurgen Klopp. The Reds have won 10 out of 11 matches this season, with their only defeat coming against Nottingham Forest during game week four.

Against Chelsea though, the Dutchman would have to overcome his biggest hurdle yet. It was a tight affair between too top sides but in the end, some individual brilliance from Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones made the difference. Liverpool remain top of the Premier League on 21 points, not bad at all!

Moment of match day eight:

The best moment this week came after Manchester City’s last gasp victory over Wolves where Gary O’Neil suggested referees have a “subconscious bias” that could swing in favour of the bigger teams.

The Wolves boss said: “Without even knowing it, are you more likely to give it to Manchester City or Wolves?”

“If I had to upset someone in the street and there was a little guy and a big guy, I’m upsetting the little guy. There is something in there and they definitely don’t do it on purpose but maybe there’s something that edges it in that direction when it’s really tight.”
