What happened during match day seven?
Liverpool kicked off game week seven with a 1-0 victory over a struggling Crystal Palace side to go four point clear momentarily. Arsenal and Manchester City both secured three point though to tighten the gap back to one point.
Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon missed a penalty against his former club, leading to a 0-0 affair at Goodison Park. Facundo Buononotte scored the only goal in Leicester’s first win of the campaign, Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth were on the wrong side of that result. Brentford beat Wolves 5-3 and West Ham beat Ipswich 4-1 in Saturday’s more action packed fixtures.
On Sunday the highly anticipated clash between Aston Villa and Manchester United ended goalless. Does that mean Erik ten Hag will remain United boss after the international break? Nottingham Forest were bought down to 10 men against Chelsea but an incredible performance from Mats Sels allowed them to earn a vital point against Chelsea. The weekend concluded on the South Coast as Tottenham threw away a two-goal led at half time. Brighton scored three goals in 18 minutes to cause a shock at the Amex and bounce back in style following their 4-2 demolition in game week six.
What did we learn?
Brentford put their early goal to use – It took Brentford until the second minute to break the deadlock against Wolves, rather late by their standards. This week though they held onto their early advantage and came out on top in an eight goal thriller as the 5-3 winners. In the previous three matches where they had scored within a minute, Brentford failed to secure victory. After the international break they face Manchester United where they’ll be hoping to cause a shock at Old Trafford with another quick goal.
Kovacic at the double in City win – City dropped points last week without Rodri and this week they looked shaky again. Fulham had an array of chances to beat the Champions but couldn’t take them. In the end it was Mateo Kovacic who took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored a brace to keep City in second.
Tottenham collapse at the Amex – After heading in at the interval 2-0 ahead, there looked no way back for Brighton who were set to suffer their first home defeat under Fabian Hurzeler. Somehow though, Spurs lost control in the second half and allowed Brighton to come back and win 3-2. Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck scored to flip the game on its head and guide Albion into sixth position. Ange Postecoglu described the second half performance as “unacceptable”. Check out my latest podcast to find out how Brighton stunned Spurs in 18 minutes.
Moment of match day seven:
The best moment this week came in Arsenal’s 3-1 victory against Southampton, where Kai Havertz scored for the seventh game in a row at the Emirates.
Although the home side went a goal down to the Saints, Havertz quickly got them back on level terms. In doing so he equalled a record set by Robin van Persie in the 2011/12 season, scoring in seven consecutive home games. He could even beat the record on 22 October when the Gunners face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
