This evening, Sandro Tonali made his first appearance since October 2023 after a 10 month suspension for breaching football’s betting ban. He played 62 minutes against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup as the Magpies won 4-3 on penalties.

Tonali was at the heart of Newcastle’s early opener, threading a pass into the feet of Miguel Almiron who put Alexander Isak through on goal. The Swedish striker saw his effort saved but Joe Willock was there on the follow up after just 18 seconds.

Tonali nearly got on the scoresheet himself minutes later, Isak was the creator who slipped a pass beyond Forest’s back line to find the Italian but he was denied by Carlos Miguel.

Apart from a the early highlights, Tonali had a fairly quiet match and was substituted off just after the hour mark for Sean Longstaff who scored the winning penalty in the shootout to send Newcastle into the third round.
