Lille edged Roma 1–0 in a frantic, end-to-end clash defined by early pressure, missed penalties, and sharp tactical contrasts. Aron Sigurðsson Haraldsson’s early strike gave the French side control, before Roma squandered three separate penalty chances in a chaotic second half. In this analysis, Israel Schmidt de Azevedo breaks down how Lille’s high press and compact shape unsettled Roma’s buildup, and why Paulo Fonseca’s men held on despite the late drama.

Roma and Lille delivered a fast-paced, tactically rich contest where both sides looked to attack and press from the first whistle. Lille’s high-pressure structure forced Roma into early mistakes, while Roma’s compact back five and square midfield looked to transition through the centre. In the end, Haraldsson’s early goal proved decisive as Roma missed three penalties in a dramatic second half.

Roma looked to progress from deep by shifting Wesley and Tsimikas from their wing-back roles into full-backs, forming a narrow back five. Ahead of them, Cristante and Ayanoui acted as defensive midfielders with Soulé and Pellegrini slightly higher as central midfielders. Ferguson led the line, staying central and occupying Lille’s defensive line.

Lille, meanwhile, attacked aggressively. Giroud and Haraldsson led the press, with Correia and Sahraoui pushing up as wingers. Both central midfielders stepped forward to support, and the back line held high, compressing space.

After a frantic start with both teams exchanging chances, Lille capitalised on Roma’s mistake in the sixth minute. Tsimikas failed to control a pass, allowing Meunier to intercept and feed Correia. Instead of returning the pass, Correia spun and found Haraldsson inside the box. Ayanoui’s partial deflection didn’t clear the danger, and Haraldsson pounced, striking powerfully to give Lille an early lead.

At the 30th minute, Lille’s press again created danger. Bouaddi won possession, dribbled past Ayanoui, and combined with Sahraoui, whose quick exchange with Haraldsson ended in a low shot just wide of the far post, almost doubling the lead.

Roma’s best chance of the first half came in the 34th minute. After a clearance, Wesley recovered and drove down the right before crossing to Tsimikas. His header was blocked by Meunier, Soulé’s rebound deflected off Mbemba, and the ball fell back to Tsimikas. His follow-up shot forced Özer into a save, and Ayanoui’s attempt to reach the rebound was cleared off the line by Mandi.

When pressing, Roma formed a structure with Ferguson advancing centrally between the centre-backs. The wing-backs, Wesley and Tsimikas, pushed high as wide wingers. Ayanoui and Cristante supported as central midfielders, with Ndicka, Hermoso, and Çelik forming a compact back three near the halfway line.

Lille countered by narrowing their full-backs close to the centre-backs and keeping the wide midfielders deep to block space. Giroud and Haraldsson stayed forward as the first pressing line.

Early in the second half, Lille nearly punished Roma again. In the 54th minute, Veronk’s throw-in to Bentaleb led to a first-time long pass over the top to Giroud. The striker ran free and attempted to chip Svilar, but the Roma goalkeeper reacted quickly to make an excellent save.

Roma created a big chance two minutes later when Ferguson rose to meet a corner, his header flashing narrowly past the bar.

The defining sequence came in the 78th minute. Another corner struck Mandi’s outstretched hand inside the box, and after VAR review, Roma were awarded a penalty. Dovbyk stepped up but struck a weak effort straight at Özer. VAR ordered a retake as the goalkeeper left his line early, but Dovbyk’s second attempt was similarly poor, low and central, and again saved. A third retake was given for the same infringement, and this time Soulé took responsibility, only to place another weak shot within Özer’s reach, who saved again. Roma had three chances to equalise from the spot but failed each time.

In the end, Roma vs Lille was a high-tempo tactical battle. Both sides attacked bravely, but Lille’s press and compact defensive shape proved decisive. Roma’s missed penalties will dominate the headlines, but Lille’s structure and intensity earned them a deserved 1–0 win.
