The biggest La Liga fixture of the weekend didn’t disappoint in drama, even if the goals came early. Atlético Madrid, under pressure to prove their summer spending was not for nothing, secured a gritty 2–0 win over Villarreal at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

It took less than ten minutes for Atleti to set the tone. Pablo Barrios found the opener in the ninth minute after a clever assist from Julián Álvarez, putting the hosts in charge. The first half then settled into a tense battle, with cards flying, Parejo booked for Villarreal and Álvarez for Atleti.

Simeone made a calculated call at the break, replacing Álvarez with Alexander Sørloth to avoid further risk after the booking. The change seemed to steady Atleti, and within seven minutes of the restart, Marcos Llorente brilliantly assisted Nico Gonzalez, who doubled the lead in the 52nd minute.

Villarreal coach Marcelino responded with a flurry of substitutions, trying to inject life into a side that never stopped pushing. But discipline or lack undermined their effort. Veiga, Ruggeri, Mourinho, and Pedraza all picked up yellows in the second half, while Atleti also suffered setbacks as González, Le Normand, and Hancko got injured.

By the final whistle, Atleti had their statement win, grinding down a Villarreal side determined to show they belong in the title conversation. The 2–0 scoreline flatters neither side, it was a fight, and Atleti just edged it.
