Ipswich appear to have made a late swoop to sign Chuba Akpom, who looked set to join Birmingham City.

Birmingham had already previously shrugged off another rival bidder in Middlesbrough, whom the striker played for before his move to Ajax in 2023.

However, Ipswich have now entered the race to sign the 29-year-old who spent the second half of last season in France with Lille.

Akpom was scheduled for a medical this week in the Midlands, but that is now in doubt, according to Talksport. The club had already agreed a season-long loan with the Amsterdam club, which included an obligation to buy should they achieve promotion to the Premier League.

The Englishman is certain to leave Ajax this summer, having been banished from first-team training.

The forward, who came through the youth ranks at Arsenal, had his best spell in a Middlesbrough shirt, especially in the 2022/23 campaign, where he collected an array of individual awards.

That season, Akpom won the EFL Championship Golden Boot with 28 goals, Player of the Season and the PFA Championship Player’s Player of the Season, being recognised by his colleagues.
