Nico Williams has stunned the football world.

For weeks, the 21-year-old winger looked set to leave Athletic Club. Barcelona led the chase, finalised personal terms, and were only a release clause away from sealing the deal.

Nico reportedly turned down Bayern Munich and other big clubs, with sources close to the player claiming he had chosen Barça as his next step.

The only delay was supposedly Barcelona’s financial drama and LaLiga’s registration rules. Still, optimism remained high. Journalists close to the club assured fans the signing would happen. They all echoed the same, the clause would be triggered soon.

On Friday, Athletic Club announced Nico Williams had signed a new contract running until 2035. No warning, no leaks, no clues.

Just a jaw-dropping plot twist that left fans and reporters scrambling.
