What happened during match day 16?
Premier League action begun at the Emirate but Arsenal failed to put on a show. They played out a goalless draw against Everton.
Liverpool also dropped points as Fulham put them under pressure, Diogo Jota salvaged a point in the 2-2 draw. Newcastle responded to their 4-2 thrashing against Brentford last week with a four goal haul of their own. Leicester were on the receiving end of that defeat.
Ipswich beat Wolves 2-1, which led to Gary O’Neil being sacked shortly after. Aston Villa’s three game winning run was ended at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest won 2-1.
On Sunday, it was a day for the underdogs in the derbies. First, at the Amex, relegation threatened Crystal Palace ran riot in a 3-1 win against Brighton.
Later that afternoon, Ruben Amorim’s Man United completed a late comeback against Man City to win 2-1 thanks to an Amad Diallo masterclass.
Chelsea capitilised on Arsenal’s dropped points for the second week in a row, narrowly beating Brentford. Marc Cucurella opened the scoring in that game and was sent off in the 98th minute as his side won 2-1.
Sunday concluded at St Mary’s where Russell Martin’s tenure as Saints boss came to an end. His side were on the receiving end of a 5-0 humiliation against Tottenham. Many fans left the stadium after 15 minutes when Spurs went 3-0 up.
Finally, on Monday night, Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham were forced to settle for a point as Bournemouth forward Enes Unal equalised in the 90th minute with a sublime free kick.
What did we learn?
Brighton are struggling – After an impressive start to the campaign, Brighton are now four games without a win despite having arguably their easiest run of games so far.
Most recently, they were embarrassed by rival Crystal Palace as Ismaila Sarr caused havoc. Fabian Hurzeler has his first mini-crisis and he must fix it quickly.
Nottingham Forest are the real deal – After 16 games, Forest are 4th, ahead of Man City, Man United and Tottenham. It’s been quite the season so far.
Their latest victory against Aston Villa showed they should be taken seriously in the Premier League.
The win against Liverpool earlier this season wasn’t a fluke. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men can seriously hurt teams if they want to and they could geniunely challenge for Europe this season.
Wolves forced to make a managerial change – Wolves being 19th with nine points at this point in the season was unexpected to say the least. Following their most recent defeat, the club decided Gary O’Neil’s time was up.
Despite a decent season last year, Wolves have struggled to get going. Reports suggest that Vitor Pereira will become the new manager and try to get Wolves back to their best. They are currently five points from safety.
Moment of match day 16:
This week, the best moment came after Man United’s win over Man City when Bruno Fernandes wound up a few opposition fans with his post-match antics.
He was seen pointing to City’s ‘Four-in-a-row’ banner and shaking his head, before reminding the fans of the score.
He mouthed: “Four, no, it’s not four, it’s two one.” Take a look:
