Aston Villa forward, Jhon Duran, insisted he “loves” fighting for a start in Unai Emery’s squad after another super-sub display.

The Colombian forward has been short on starts this season with Ollie Watkins being given the majority of opportunities.

Duran said: “I love the competition I’ve got going with Ollie Watkins. When it’s my turn, I’ll step up”

Watkins was axed at half-time during Aston Villa’s 3-2 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League and Duran took his chance once again.

Duran scored seven minutes into the second half and played a key role in his side’s fourth Champions League win.

Match winner Ross Barkley was “happy to score the winner” but heaped praise Duran. He said the 20-year-old “made the difference”.

Barkley scored in the 85th minute to send the Villains into third position. His strike took a huge deflection but managed to nestle into the bottom left corner.

John McGinn opened the scoring inside three minutes but his side gave up their advantage twice through defensive lapses.

However, his assessment of the game was largely positive. He said “Overall we were the better team. It’s exciting to be involved, we want to keep going.”

Aston Villa could qualify for the round of 16 with a win against Monaco in January.
