FA Chief Executive Officer, Mark Bullingham, said: “We have appointed one of the very best coaches in the world. We believe Thomas gives us the best chance of winning the World Cup.”

Thomas Tuchel said he is “honoured” to be England manager and he will “try to install values and principles to make the dream come true”.

Mark Bullingham confirmed Tuchel “signed last Tuesday” and that interim manager Lee Carsley will manage the England squad for the November camp as planned before going “back to the Under-21s”.

Many fans questioned the FA for hiring a foreign coach, which has only happened twice before in England’s history. Bullingham responded to the critics, he said: “we want the very best”.

“We will convince them with results.”

Bullingham also confirmed there were “10 candidates” that were interviewed for the role and “some of them were English”.

Tuchel did not confirm whether Harry Kane would remain captain of the squad, he said: “It’s too early to answer this kind of question.”

“You know how highly I think and feel for Harry and how much I fought to bring him to Bayern Munich. We will answer those questions later in March.”

Much has been made of Lee Carsley not singing the English national anthem and Tuchel is yet to decide where he stands on that front. He said: “It’s a personal decision and I have not made my decision yet. I will always show my respect to the anthem and the country”

Tuchel insisted the pressure that comes with the England job was “never part of the decision making” in terms of taking on the role. He said: “It’s the last thing I think about… I’m up for the big challenge”.

“We will build on Gareth’s work, what he has done is outstanding. Hopefully we can build a little extra to get it over the line.”

Tuchel confirmed his contract was 18 months long but didn’t dispel the possibility of a longer tenure. He said: “You never know. It’s a good time frame as it will help us keep the focus but we’ll see.”

Tuchel was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer after leaving Bayern. He said he chose England because “the ideas from Mark [Bullingham] and John [McDermott] were very fast and exciting. It was very straightforward. It was a decision for this job and not against anything else”.
