Following England’s defeat to Greece in the Nations League, the FA have sped up their search for a successor to Gareth Southgate, who resigned after Euro 2024.

Although there was an initial enquiry to Pep Guardiola’s representatives, there have reportedly been no further developments in that area. The Manchester City manager is not thought to be an active candidate at the moment.

Tuchel has been out of work since May when he left German side Bayern Munich and is now the FA’s top target to take over from interim manager Lee Carsley.

Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett revealed FA technical director, John McDermott “wants a manager who wants to win a trophy”.

Tuchel has a proven track record of winning trophies; he has won league titles with both PSG and Bayern Munich, as well as the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup with Chelsea.

Tuchel could be confirmed quickly if negotiations progress well, however very little about his contract has been agreed yet.

Other candidates were in the running, such as Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Jurgen Klopp. Lee Carsley was also an option, however he has provided confusing messages over his future in the role, suggesting he will go straight back to the Under-21s.

If appointed, Tuchel will become the third non-English manager of the mens English team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
