Welcome back to Premier League round up’s on INMR, where this week I’ll be covering game week four. This game week saw a shock at Anfield, Everton on the wrong end of another comeback and Arsenal earn the bragging rights in the North London Derby. All that and more coming up – enjoy!
My latest podcast is out now! This week I analysed Tottenham’s new signings Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert and Archie Gray and how they suit Ange Postecoglu’s system at Spurs. Click here to listen and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss a future episode.
What happened during match day four?
Premier League football returned with a bang after the international break. Manchester United kick started the weekend with a 3-0 win on the South Coast against Russell Martin’s Southampton. The Saints are yet to secure a point yet and sit in 19th above Everton on goal difference.
Everton had another poor weekend as they lost 3-2 against Aston Villa despite being 2-0 up initially. Crystal Palace and Leicester played out another entertaining fixture, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a brace to help the Eagles to a 2-2 draw. Including a 92nd minute goal to save his side from a suprising defeat to newly promoted Leicester.
In a less entertaining affair, Brighton vs Ipswich ended 0-0 which was the first goalless draw of this Premier League season. The Albion had 21 shots but Arijanet Muric had a spectacular performance for Ipswich to lead his side to their first point on the road.
Haaland scored another two against Brentford, Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the winner against Liverpool as Nottingham Forest got an unlikely win at Anfield for the first time since 1969. Finally, Gabriel’s headed goal saw Arsenal narrowly beat Tottenham in the North London Derby.
What did we learn?
De Ligt silenced his doubters – After a tough international break – making a big error against Germany which led to him being axed at half-time for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke – Matthijs de Ligt had a point to prove upon his return.
The Dutch defender scored the opener against Southampton in his side’s 3-0 win. He also made a goal line clearance, keeping the Red Devils’ clean sheet intact. Not a bad way to respond after a high profile poor performance just four days prior.
Hudson-Odoi provides Slot a reality check – Liverpool had 70 per cent possession against Forest but Callum Hudson-Odoi struck gold when it matterred to win the game for his side, ending Liverpool’s perfect record this season.
Arne Slot made a triple change on the hour mark to solve his side’s goal scoring dilemma but it didn’t work, instead it was Forest’s sub who would score the winner 12 minutes later. “It was a stop-start game,” Slot said. “You couldn’t get a good rhythm and as a result of that we hardly created any chances. We had to be better with the ball than we were.”
It was another fiery North London Derby – The clash between Arsenal and Tottenham delivered everything you expect, plenty of tension and heated moments. The first half alone saw seven bookings, tying the Premier League record, as both teams battled for control.
Jurrien Timber was involved in one of those moments, making a crunching tackle on Pedro Porro that led to an altercation involving Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard was caught in a clash and left with his shirt torn.
Moment of match day four:
It’s that man again, in game week one he made headlines for scoring against West Ham, the team who he came close to joining in the summer, and this week he scored a screamer to win the game for Aston Villa. After Ollie Watkins bought Villa back on level terms against Everton, Duran provided the special moment to claim all three points.
Duran has now scored three goals this season, but this one is certainly the pick of the bunch and we may already have the goal of the month winner, take a look.
