What happened during match day three?

In the final weekend of Premier League action before the international break, it was a typical weekend of football: refereeing controversy and a Haaland hat-trick. What more do you need?

Manchester City and Liverpool remain the only two sides with an 100% win record as 10-man Arsenal dropped points at the Emirates in a controversial 1-1 draw against Brighton. Haaland led City to victory with another hat-trick whilst Liverpool emphatically beat Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Everton were winning 2-0 against Bournemouth until the 86th minute and somehow lost 3-2. Goals from Antoine Semenyo, Lewis cook and Luis Sinisterra saw the Cherries complete an incredible comeback at Goodison Park. Crystal Palace and Ipswich got off the mark with 1-1 draws against Chelsea and Fulham respectively.

Bryan Mbuemo continued his fine start to the season as Brentford’s new main man with a brace in a 3-1 win over Southampton. Ivan Toney watched on for the final time after completing a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli on deadline day.

What did we learn?

Erling Haaland is INEVITABLE – After sweeping Ipswich aside last week, Haaland took the match ball home for the second match day in a row following a 3-1 victory against West Ham. Despite having the least touches out of any other player on the pitch, the Norwegian robot made the most of his chances to lead his side to victory.

He reached 70 goals for City in what was his 69th appearance meaning he now averages more than a goal a game since making his debut at the London Stadium in 2022. Ridiculous!

Declan Rice’s red card caused controversy – Arsenal dropped points at home to Brighton after Rice was shown a second yellow just three minutes into the second half for kicking the ball away from Joel Veltman as he attempted to take a quick free kick.

Rice, who was already on a yellow card for a poor slide tackle in the first half, saw referee Chris Kavanagh show him a second booking on Saturday, meaning he will miss the North London Derby after the international break. There’s been plenty of controversy around the decision, Rice said: “I was shocked but this is the laws of the game. It was harsh but I have to move on from it.”

Ryan Gravenberch could be the answer to Liverpool’s number six issues – The tale of Liverpool’s transfer window has been a struggle to appoint a defensive midfielder, with players such as Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubamendi opting to stay at their current clubs. However, the solution to all their problems could have been right under their nose’s the entire window.

Slot has been forced to play Gravenberch as the six in recent games and he’s fitted in superbly. His performance against Man United in particular has sparked conversation around the Dutch midfielder and his abilities to permanently make that role his own.

Moment of match day three:

Did Mohamed Salah let something slip after the 3-0 win at Old Trafford? It certainly seemed that way as he spoke about his future at Liverpool. Salah performance but in post match interview he said: “As you know it’s my last year at the club. I just want to enjoy it and don’t want to think about it, I’m free to play football. We can see what will happen next year.” Arne Slot played down the speculation but fans are still let worried about the Egyptian King’s future, take a look:
