Welcome back to Premier League round up’s on INMR, where this I’ll be covering the opening day. This season we are going to do things a little bit differently, so check out all the new features in this article.
My latest podcast is out now! This week I’ll predicted the Premier League 2024/25 positions from 20th to 1st. Click here to listen and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss a future episode.
What happened during match day one?
Inevitably, this was a weekend full of debut triumphs; Joshua Zirkzee got things under way with a late winner against Fulham 26 minutes into his Manchester United career whilst Onana opened the scoring for Aston Villa three minutes into his debut against West Ham.
History was made as Mohamed Salah broke the record for most goals scored on match day one in the Premier League (9). In Liverpool, the youngest manager in Premier League history, Fabian Hurzeler (31), lead Brighton to a 3-0 victory against Everton.
As for the two title contenders, both Man City and Arsenal won 2-0 against Chelsea and Wolves respectively. It took Erling Haaland just 18 minutes to open his account for this season, in North London Bukayo Saka starred, getting a goal and assist.
What did we learn?
Haaland had the last laugh over ‘Cucu-Cucurella’ – Following Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, Marc Cucurella’s chant went viral as he sung “Haaland you’d better tremble as Cucurella is coming”. Today in Haaland’s 100th City appearance he scored his 91st goal for the club, and who else but the Spanish defender to have the best view in the stadium for the goal. In a post-match interview, the City striker said: “He can do what he wants, I couldn’t care less. Last season the guy asked for my shirt”.
Arsenal don’t really need a striker – There has been plenty of talk about the Gunners bringing in a number nine this summer but it’s yet to happen and after their win of over Wolves, it seems there isn’t much need. They’ve been linked with £100m+ moves for Viktor Gyokeres or Ivan Toney but could the money be used better elsewhere?
Kai Havertz continues to lead the line well, opening his clubs account with a smart header and Saka is as clinical as ever coming in off the flanks. Last season Arsenal scored 91 goals in the league, only Man City scored more (96) so they’ve already proven an out and out nine isn’t essential.
James Maddison shines on Leicester return – The opening weekend came to a close on Monday night as Leicester and Tottenham shared the spoils. In a disappointing evening for Spurs, Maddison stood out upon his return to the Foxes after departing last summer. He assisted Pedro Porro’s goal and created plenty of other chances for his side to increase their advantage.
Moment of match-day one:
Jhon Duran scoring the winner against the team that tried to buy him weeks ago. The Aston Villa forward was heavily linked with West Ham and he was even seen on social media doing the “Irons” pose, however on Saturday he scored the winning goal against the Hammers and apologised to the Villa fans during his celebration. I think they’ve forgiven him, take a look:
