  • The last time an Italian club won the Super Cup was in 2007 when AC Milan beat Sevilla 3-1.

REAL MADRID VS ATALANTA: AS IT HAPPENED

′: Atalanta get us underway in Warsaw as referee Sandro Scharer blows his whistle.

′: Sead Kolasinac concedes a free kick as he bundles Rodrygo to the ground out on the right flank.

′: The first glimpse of Real Madrid’s newest Galactico: Kylian Mbappe.

′: Vinicius Junior looks to take on Davide Zappacosta, he drives towards the byline and wins a corner. Rodrygo will take but Atalanta clear the danger, Real Madrid are back in possession though.

′: Mbappe and Vinicius are already linking up nicely, exchanging quick passes around the Atalanta defence.

′: Charles De Ketelaere plays a wonderful pass through to Zappacosta who drives toward Thibaut Courtois in attempt to cut the ball back. However, Scharer gives Real Madrid a free kick for a foul in the middle of the box on Eder Militao.

′: Ederson is shown a yellow card for his foul on Federico Valverde, a needless challenge and he’ll be stepping on egg shells now for the remainder of this final.

′: Zappacosta goes down holding his head. The replay doesn’t show a lot of contact between him and Ferland Mendy but the Italian has stayed down.

′: Zappacosta is back on his feet and play resumes.

′: Ademola Lookman skips past his marker and drives a low cross into the box but it’s easily collected by Courtois. Positive stuff though from the Europa League final hero.

′: Mbappe gets his first opportunity! Valverde nicked the ball out on the right wing and burst forward. He found Mbappe in the penalty area whose sweeping effort was blocked.

′: Superb ball from Vinicius is met by Jude Bellingham, he plays a first time pass into Mbappe but it was just behind the Frenchman. Carlo Ancelotti’s side as starting to find momentum.

′: Atalanta stringing a few passes together for the first time in this match, their opponents have totally dominated so far.

′: Zappacosta is finding plenty of joy down the right wing, putting some decent deliveries into the box but his teammates are yet to turn the ball goalwards.

′: It is still goalless at the mid-way point in the first half. Los Blancos have had the upper hand but no goal to show for it at the moment.

′: De Ketelaere keeps the ball alive in the penalty area and attempts to go past Antonio Rudiger. The Belgian loses the ball and goes to ground but the referee’s having none of it.

′: Atalanta have had most of the ball in the last few minutes, hanging around Real Madrid’s 18-yard box but not doing a lot with it.

′: Ederson goes for the spectacular from long range but his shot is high and wide, Courtois confidently watches the ball sail into the stands.

′: There’s been a lot of talk about who will replace Toni Kroos in the midfield and to many people’s surprise, Vinicius seems to be occupying that space at times. He’s tried to thread another ball over the top from a deep area with Mbappe and Bellingham running onto it.

′: Atalanta have never beaten Real Madrid, last time the two sides faced off Los Blancos won 4-1 across two legs in the Champions League round of 16.

′: Lookman initially looked through on goal there but lacked pace to burst away from Rudiger who wins the ball back.

′: Vinicius dinks the ball over the Atalanta defence finding Bellingham who chests it down. The touch is slighty away from him and he kicks the goalkeeper whilst trying to meet it again, yellow card for the English midfielder.

′: Lots of movement from the Real Madrid players, everyone seems to be playing everywhere at the moment. Vinicius in centre midfield, Militao on the right wing. Organised chaos or just a mess?

′: Bellingham lays the ball off to Vinicius who attempts the elastico flick past his defender but the ball springs off his boot awkwardly and goes out for a goal kick.

′: Ancelotti has the chance to become the coach with the most Super Cup titles, surpassing Pep Guardiola (four). The Real Madrid boss’ first triumph came in 1990 as a player for AC Milan.

′: Vinicius received a booking for a late stamping challenge on Marten de Roon. The Brazilian isn’t happy but the replay shows Scharer got that one right.

′: Atalanta have a corner but it’s wasted as Courtois collects easily. He tries to launch a counter but it’s unsuccessful.

+1′: Rodrygo hits the crossbar! Vinicius finds his fellow Brazlian with the outside of his boot. Rodrygo was leaning back slighty as he took the shot, preventing him from finding the target in the final moments of the half.

HT: It’s goalless at the break but Real Madrid have dominated and almost had the goal to show for it in the dying seconds before the break. Atalanta have barely threatened at times but haven’t been punished yet as they’ve held firm defensively. Plenty more to come in the second half, see you in 15 minutes.

′: The second half is underway. Hopefully they’ll be a bit more action in this second period, we are yet to see a shot on target from either sides.

′: WHAT A SAVE FROM COURTOIS! Fantastic cross from Zappacosta, Mario Pasalic meets it in the air and for a moment it looks as though the deadlock may break. Courtois got across his goalline and made an incredible finger-tip stop.

′: Atalanta have a corner and try out an interesting routine, it ends with Matteo Rugerri smashing the ball towards goal but his effort is just wide.

′: Vinicius emerges with the ball again but can’t find a way through as the Atalanta defender have doubled up on the tricky winger.

′: Bellingham glides away effortlessly through three blue and black shirts. Once he turns the burners on the Atalanta players can’t do anything to stop him.

′: Valverde sets up Bellingham perfectly on the edge of the area. The Englishman opens his body up and tries to bend the ball into the far corner with his left foot but can’t find the corner.

′: Rudiger picks the ball up in the middle of the park and bursts forward. He lays the ball off to Bellingham before continuing his run and gets it back but is unable to get a shot off in time. A great run though from the centre back.

′: GOALLLL FOR REAL MADRID!! Valverde with the simple tap in. Vinicius beats Berat Djimsiti with a drop of the shoulder and rolls the ball across the face of goal where Valverde was free to easily prod the ball home.

′: Vinicius is through on goal but misses. You’d have bet your house on the Brazilian making it two there but Juan Musso made himself big and stopped the shot.

′: How did Musso keep that out? Vinicius earnt the corner and it was taken quickly; the ball falls to Bellingham who takes the shot. It’s blocked but looks to be heading back towards goal, Musso rises to his feet after initially diving and palms the ball off the goal line. What a stop!

′: Double change for Atalanta as De Ketelaere and Zappacosta make way. Ben Godfrey and Mateo Retegui both come on for their debuts.

′: Free kick for Real Madrid on the far left side, it’s swung in towards Militao but Atalanta manage to clear the danger.

′: Lookman gets away from Militao with a cheeky nutmeg but his cross isn’t good enough to find a teammate.

′: GOALLL FOR REAL MADRID!! Mbappe scores on his big night and makes it two for Los Blancos. Vinicius initially tried to set him up with a square ball but it ran past the Frenchman. Jude Bellingham kept the attack alive and made a better pass into Mbappe who made no mistake. A tidy finish into the top right corner giving his side a two goal cushion in Warsaw.

′: Atalanta make another change, Mitchel Bakker replaces Kolasinac.

′: Dani Carvajal has made it through the game so far without a booking. If his side wins tonight it will be his third trophy in 74 days, his latest triumph came a month ago today in the European Championships.

′: Rudiger emerges forward again but this time doesn’t make it as far as the penalty box. Instead he is thwarted at the half way line.

′: Godfrey nearly pulls one back on his debut but Militao clears the ball off the line. Godfrey never scored for Everton but nearly put one into the back of the net 13 minutes into his Atalanta career.

′: Luka Modric comes on for Rodrygo to make his 535th appearance for Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal hands him the captain’s armband so if they win tonight, he’ll lift the trophy.

′: Brahim Diaz is getting ready to come on, however Endrick remains seated. Will we see the Brazilian make his debut tonight?

′: Ferland Mendy is caught on his knee whilst in the air by Atalanta’s new signing Retegui. Free kick to Real Madrid.

′: Modric is patient in the build up and finds Vinicius with a pass towards the byline. Vinicius sqaures the ball again but can’t find a teammate as he did for the opener.

′: Mbappe’s night is over as Brahim Diaz comes on for the final 10 minutes or so. The first of many goals for him in a white shirt.

′: Brahim Diaz has one goal and one assist in pre season, can he make an impact in the final moments of this match?

′: Atalanta passing between themselves but can’t find a way through Real Madrid’s defence. Valverde jumps into action in the end to tackle Lookman.

′: Triple change for Real Madrid. Carvajal, Vinicius and Bellingham’s night comes to a close as Dani Ceballos, Arda Guler and Lucas Vazquez replace them.

′: It looks like Endrick won’t make his debut tonight. The 18 year old joined Real Madrid for €47.5m from Palmeiras after two years at the Brazilian club, during that time he made 82 appearances and scored 21 goals.

′: Another double change for Atalanta, Pasalic and Isak Hien are replaced by Marco Palestra and Alberto Manzoni.

+1′: This is Lucas Vazquez’s 350th appearance for Real Madrid, a nice milestone for the Spaniard tonight alongside what looks to be a Super Cup victory.

FT: Real Madrid are UEFA Super Cup champions for a record breaking sixth time. Valverde opened the scoring on the hour mark but it’s Mbappe who will steal the headlines as he scored on his debut. That’s all from me – thanks for following along, goodbye!
