Atletico Madrid announced they have signed the striker on a six year deal lasting until June 2030, after their bid was accepted by Man City earlier this month.

Alvarez enjoyed a two year stint at Manchester City, where he won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League. He made 103 appearances for the club, scoring 36 goals.

The departure of the World Cup winner represents a club-record sale for Man City who have made a huge profit on the young forward they bought for £14m from River Plate in 2022.

Following the announcement, Alvarez took to social media to say his goodbye’s. He said: “Today I say goodbye to this wonderful club with a lot of emotions. They were two very special years. During this time, I grew and learned a lot as a player and as a person.”

“To my teammates, thank you for every moment shared, for the effort and dedication in every training and in every game. I learned so much from each of you and I carry with me memories and friendships that will last forever.”

“To the fans, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the great support and for making me feel at home since day one. I will always be very proud to have been part of this family.”

Atletico Madrid kick off their La Liga campaign on Monday 19 August at 20:30pm (BST) against Villarreal.
